Clay Sourced From: Iraq

Dimensions: 6“ High x 12” Diameter. - 2023

This clay was kindly sourced by Lucy Forsyth whilst visiting Iraq (Kurdistan).  Lucy was my Contextual Studies Lecturer whilst doing my MA. She was in Iraq visiting her son who was working there at the time.

Due to restriction for foreigners and especially women going around and sourcing clay, it was obtained with great appreciation by the spa manager Abdulla, at the hotel well Lucy was staying. He knew of a pottery in the desert and spent time on his day off to get me some.

Lucy had an interesting time at customs as the security officer who was checking the clay, by chopping it with a machete to check there was nothing untoward was in there and as he was doing it he said in his conversation with Lucy, how much he loved pottery and likes to do it himself when he gets a chance.
